A woman's inspiring journey to independence while losing her vision.  Julia Spencer takes the reader into her dreams, her fears, her hopes, her deepest private thoughts, and her most candid responses to her shrinking visual world. With humor and a feisty yet surprisingly gentle attitude, she begins to accept vision loss, welcoming her guide dog Irene into her life and discovering through that keyhole-sized remnant of vision a deeper understanding of her husband and family and world. The confines of her vision loss cannot restrain the vibrant energy and independence of this remarkable woman.

"Inspirational as humor alternates with bleak reality in a fine balance between description and emotional response."

--Walt Giersbach, author of Cruising the Green of Second Avenue

"The writing is alive ... the narrative digs back into past attitudes and events, and the self-examination regarding lack of trust and the need for independence are honest and compelling."

 --Diane Elliott, author and editor

Anyone struggling with a life-altering condition will find this story inspiring and motivating.

Looking Through a Keyhole
By Julia Spencer

This book grabs you at the very beginning and doesn't let you go. It is not a conventional thriller, but an inspiring true story of how Julia Spencer dealt with the gradual loss of her vision from retinitis pigmentosa. Julia takes us from the time she realizes she can no longer drive at night to the awareness that she can't see well enough to drive at all. She resists and then accepts walking with a white cane. She doesn't want people to feel sorry for her. Reluctant at first, she gets a guide dog, Irene, and forms a deep bond with the animal.

The diminished eyesight is not the only problem Julia faces. She has issues with trust because of experiences earlier in her life. Her husband and family are very supportive, but Julia wants to remain independent. At first she goes with Irene only in her neighborhood, but later she and Irene take a bus to New York City. After that they take a plane to Florida. She realizes that despite the limited eyesight, she still has a lot to live for.

The reader admires Julia's indomitable spirit and her generous heart. The book will move you deeply, and you will never forget it. It is not just a story for people who suffer loss of vision. It is a story for anyone who faces adversity, and that includes all of us.

Carl Perrin, author of RFD 1, Grangely
It's axiomatic that we all have fears to overcome. Julia Spencer can lay a more valid claim to having concerns. She discovered a few years ago that she would soon be blind from retinitis pigmentosa. This corporate sales executive who led an active life in New York had to face the fact that she'd soon stop driving, she needed to rely on husband and friends to take her places, and there was the horror that one day she would no longer read.

"When you lose your independence," she says, "you lose your self esteem." Fortunately, for her and her family, she had the courage to fight for her independence. "When I have a problem," she explains, "I write." And, "You can't continue to be creative without losing your fear." Fortunately for anyone reaching blindness or a similar physical setback, Julia set out to describe her experience -- what it meant to accept the fact she needed a guide dog, that she had to make a solo trip into New York city by herself, had to confront doctors and other who told her to just give up and accept the fact.

"Looking Through a Keyhole" was the culmination of a learning process as her sight deteriorated. I had the honor --and education -- of being with Julia at a writers' group near her home as this memoir came together. Along the way I and others asked her to explain more about certain events and to describe how her situation was affecting others in her life. Week after week, we saw this marvelous book come together. I remember in 2011 how exultant she was over author Bruce Jay Friedman's glowing critique of "Through the Keyhole" -- especially the "dream sequence" we had argued about. She was especially full of positive feelings and testimonials after attending the Marymount Manhattan Writers Conference where she talked with Friedman.

She also met Andrew Potok, spokesman and director of publications and information for the Southern Poverty Law Center. Potok is the author of "Ordinary Daylight Portrait of an Artist Going Blind." Does she "cheerfully chirp her way through life"? No, she despairs, although she's redefined herself many times in many ways.

I remember the poignancy in March 2011 when her manuscript was coming together and she was on her way to seeing the memoir published. She queried our preferences for the book's cover (Right on, Julia!). She also was first up to read, with the chapter that involved her first solo trip to New York City to see the Christmas show at Radio City Music Hall. It was a new experience in spite of her familiarity with the city, especially when street curbs and solicitous strangers underscored the newness of the trip. At the end, she wrote of anticipating her first airplane travel with just her guide dog, Irene. Our group was enriched by having Julia work through her manuscript with us.

"Looking Through a Keyhole" is that rare memoir that is both educational and inspirational. I learned of discrimination the sightless experience, how to communicate with those with visual impairment, and the strengths this kind of event can have on a person. I also was able to put aside the natural cynicism of our age and see Julia and others overcoming bad breaks as inspiring heroes. May I recommend it for anyone wanting to plumb the heights and depths of human experience and as a gift for anyone who may be in danger of losing his or her sight?
Excellent story how one woman faced losing her eye sight
What a marvelous story of triumph! Julia and Irene make you realize that no challenge is too great as they show us that trust and confidence can conquer anything!
Very informative about the seeing eye program.
What an inspiring read. The book was hard to put down and I didn't want it to end. Julia's writing makes you feel like you are on the journey with her. She openly shares her hopes, her dreams, & her fears, allowing the reader to get a clear picture of what it feels like to loose ones sight.

As Julia shares the different aspects accompanying the loss of sight, she is able to add humor and determination. When she speaks of the support from her husband Ralph, you can sense the caring and love he has for her, but Julia is determine to stay as independent as possible, even going to New York alone with her guide dog Irene.

I highly recommend this book and look forward to her next.
I really enjoyed this book. It gave me great insight into a world that I've never been exposed to. I learned so much about the Seeing Eye and RP. While being entertained with the wonderfully honest story of one woman's journey. I fell in love with Irene. I wish Jules and Ralph all the best that life has to offer. I'd love to read a sequel because I was caught up in their lives and would love to hear more. I feel like they are friends I'd like to check in on.
A heartfelt story of living with a disability of blindness that will only get worse. Julia takes on her journey and you meet Irene, her guide dog and it's a wonderful relationship. To learn to re define yourself is not an easy journey. Despite the help of others, only that person lives the life that others can't comprehend. Fortunately, she has a great husband and family.
